How to use beard balm: A 4-step guide for beards of all types

Beard balm is wonderful stuff. If you buy from a quality brand that uses natural ingredients and takes care with their formulation, you’ll have a softer, healthier feeling beard that looks and smells great.

(At Waxed Grooming we aim to give you the best of both worlds with the shea butter, coconut oil and jojoba oil for hydration, and beeswax for a firmer hold.)

While there is no wrong way to use beard balm (well, we’d recommend that you don’t eat it), there are a few steps you can take to get the most benefit from your beard grooming experience.

(p.s. We dropped a little gift for your at the end of the post. 👀)

Step 1: Wash your beard

Cleanliness is next to beardliness.

Like most things in life, beard balm works best when your beard is good and clean.

Washing your beard will help keep it clean of dirt and dust (as well as food crumbs) that collect in your beard throughout the day. A good beard wash routine also exfoliates the skin under your beard, preventing clogged pores and reducing the risk of ingrown hairs or acne.

Once you’ve washed your beard, dry it gently with a soft towel and use a comb or beard brush to detangle it so that you can apply the beard balm evenly.

While we don’t (currently) make any of our own beard wash products, read on for the brands that we love if you’re looking for a beard wash or shampoo that you can trust.

Step 2: Scoop and melt

Melts in your hands, no need to put it in your mouth.

Now that your beard is ready you can begin applying your beard balm. Scoop out a pea-sized amount of beard balm for short to medium-sized beards, and two or more for longer beards.

Note: This isn’t an exact science. Test different amount of balms and find the feel that’s right for you.
Straighten your fingers together and rub the beard balm between your hands until it’s softened and clear. Once your hands are fully covered with the softened balm, you’re ready to apply it to your beard.

Step 3: Apply the balm

Get in there nice and deep like.

Starting at the roots of your facial hair, gently spread the balm across your whole beard. Make sure that you have spread the balm all the way from the roots to the ends.

Then using the tips of your fingers reach under your chin and rub the oils into your skin. The natural oils in our beard balms are great for your skin because they match your skin’s natural oils.

Finally, use the remaining balm and spread it across the bottom of your beard, once again working from the roots under your chin to the end of the hair.

Step 4: Brush or comb

Make everything nice and… shapely.

Once you’ve applied the balm to your entire beard, grab you comb or beard brush and sculpt it to your liking. And voila, you now have a gently fragranced, softer beard for the rest of the day.

From personal experience we’ve found that while the fragrance dissipates after a few hours, using a quality beard balm regularly helps your beard maintain that softer, easier to manage feel for days on end.

The benefits of beard balm

As we mentioned earlier, a quality beard balm will contain natural ingredients that play different roles in keeping your beard gorgeous.

Shea butter

All of our signature beard balms use a shea butter base that is rich in fatty acids and vitamins. This hydrates your skin and hair, and helps prevent dryness or flakiness. If you want to find out more about the benefits of this incredible ingredient, read on here.

Carrier oils

Our recipes also contain coconut and jojoba oils which are great for hydration as well as reducing dandruff, strengthening beard hair, and reducing breakage. They also play a role in nourishing your beard by balancing oil production without clogging your pores.

Beeswax

When it comes to styling, the best beard balms contain natural beeswax which provides a great styling hold that helps shape your beard and tame unruly hairs. Beeswax is great for locking in hydration from the oils and keeps your beard from drying out, and softens coarse beard hairs.

Fragrance oils

As with everything else in our balms, our fragrance oils are specifically chosen to keep your beard soft and healthy and provide a soft appealing aroma.
